Schedule a practical in-service for your Guidance Counselors who will 

Use Technology for Student Advocacy

Workshop Goals

Technology Workshops f'or Guidance Counselors are designed to provide guidance counselors with skills and knowledge necessary to integrate technology into their work as student advocates.

Participants of the workshops will:

- develop Power Point Presentations that will be used in information sessions for students and parents;

- develop a web site that will include links to other web sites, a newsletter for students and parents, a plan for students to use the Internet for career exploration, college search, in-depth college information, scholarship search, and general information about their guidance offices

- experience aspects of the Internet including email, Egroups, FTP, and chat.

Possible Workshop Configurations

Workshops are available in one, two, or three day formats. Examples of what can be covered :

One-Day Workshop Agenda

8:00 - 10:15 - Presentation overview of Power Point, Database uses, and Internet resources.

10:30 - 12:00 - Building a Power Point Presentation

1:00 - 2:15 Power Point Continued

2:30 - 4:00 Using the Internet

Two-Day Workshop Agenda

Day One

8:00 - 10:!5 - Overview of Technology uses in the Guidance Office including Power Point, Database uses, and Internet resources.

10:30 - 12:00 - Building a Power Point Presentation

1:00 - 2:15 Power Point Fundamentals Continued

2:30 - 4:00 Lab time and advanced Power Point techniques.

Day Two

8:00 - 12:00 Fundamentals of Web Page construction.

1:00 - 3:00 Web page development, uploading files to internet - putting the web page on the web.

3:00 - 4:00 EGroup development.

Three-Day Workshop Agenda

All items from the two-day workshop would be covered in more depth and with more lab time. Additionally, counselors will construct a database and work with the data within the database.

Or, mix and match for your counselors' needs!

 

Ideally, the workshops will be conducted in a computer lab. Every counselor-participant will need a computer with Microsoft Office and Netscape Communicator 4.x, and Internet capabilities, preferably high speed.

About the Workshop Facilitator
Bob Turba is Chairman of Guidance Services at Stanton College Preparatory School, a public magnet school in Jacksonville, FL. Bob has held his present position for the past eighteen years. In addition to the responsibilities of this position, he also serves as the school's Computer Network Administrator. Previous to that, he was a guidance counselor at Wantagh High School on Long Island, NY for eleven years, and in various public and private positions for four years prior. He has served the College Board as the state representative to the Southern Region from Florida for three years, and as Secretary of the council for 1997-98. He has presented at the Summer Institute for the past 4 summers. He has brought the AP Vertical Teaming concept to the Jacksonville School District. Bob is serving as the Technology Chairman on a University of North Florida Counselor Education Department grant writing team - Transforming School Counseling Initiative, sponsored by the Educational Trust and funded by Reader's Digest, DeWitt Wallace. He has presented at CEEB regional and national conferences, SACAC, NACAC, and other state and national conferences His Cyber Guidance web site is at http://cyberguidance.net/. These activities were featured in the April 1999 issue of The College Choice Report. The On-line Journal of Technology in Counseling at http://jtc.colstate.edu/vol_1/advocacy_old.htm, and the April 2000 and 2001 NACAC Journal. Articles that have featured Bob and his technological skills are Education Week, October 2002, Bits and Bytes of Guidance, and also in Teacher Magazine, February, 2003, Click Here For Guidance. Bob holds a B.A. from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA, and a M. Ed. from the University of Pittsburgh, and he has completed course work towards an Ed. D. in Educational Leadership.
